Zomba City Council has commended civil society organisations for their humanitarian support to communities that were affected by cyclone Jude in Mpira Ward in Zomba City.

Director of Administration for Zomba City Council, Davie Mlose, said this following a cash disbursement exercise to 98 households that were affected by the cyclone.

Speaking during a ceremony attended by community members and government officials at Grace Orphan Care, Mlose expressed gratitude to Self Help and its partner organisations for their support, saying this shows the importance of working collaboratively in the provision of relief to those in need.

“This collaboration between the council, Self Help and other partner organisations shows how collective action can uplift communities,” said Mlose.

Commenting on the development, NGO Humanitarian Coordinator for Self Help, Blessings Mlowoka, urged families to use the money wisely to rebuild their homes and recover from the cyclone’s damage.

“Let me urge the beneficiaries to use these funds wisely. Invest in rebuilding safer homes, securing livelihoods especially on nutrition, and protecting yourselves from future climate shocks,” said Mlowoka.

Among the recipients was a 54-year-old Esinala Kunthembwe, a mother of five, who said the money will help in repairing her house which was blown off during the storm.

“This money is a lifeline. For weeks, we have slept under a leaking house. Now, I will buy plastic sheets and some timber to fix my house,” she said.

Through ECHO Project, Self Help has disbursed K70, 000 to the affected households in partnership with other humanitarian organisations with support from the European Union.
