The Ministry of Higher Education says exchange of languages and culture between Malawi and China will help the two countries expand opportunities in different sectors especially trade and education.
The remarks were made in Lilongwe by the minister responsible, Jessie Kabwira, at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) as the Chinese government handed over cars and the Conficius Institute (CI) building which has a sports court, and a lecture block housing a computer lab, library and a lecture theatre, among others.
Kabwira said the CI will play a big role towards human capital development as outlined in Malawi 2063, as it will open doors to many who would want to advance their learning and increase their chances of employability.
“This is a chance to equip Malawians in the formal and informal sectors to go to the world and conduct trade. This will also help students of KUHeS, University of Malawi (UNIMA), and even business people to showcase what they can do to the Chinese people or others from anywhere in the world,” explained Kabwira.

The Chinese ambassador to Malawi, Lu Xu, said the institute came about because the two countries have a shared vision which will go beyond teaching languages.
“We want to be reliable partners to the Malawi government and we try our best to support the necessary development so that we can move together in the process of industrialisation and modernisation,” added Xu.
The Confucius Institute was established to promote and facilitate the teaching of Chinese language and culture in Malawi through UNIMA and KUHeS.
