Police in Zomba have arrested a 49-year-old woman for trying to sneak in eight brand new Itel cellphones and loose cannabis sativa into Zomba Central Maximum Prison.
According to Zomba Police Spokesperson, Patricia Sipiliyano, the suspect has been identified as Esmey Hamisi, from Makanjira Village in the area of Traditional Authority Makanjira in Mangochi District.
Sipiliyano said the suspect went to the prison on 6 April, 2025 to visit a relative who is serving an 18-year sentence for robbery and she brought a basket of food where she hid the phones, five phone chargers, five memory cards and eight brand new Itel batteries inside an empty plastic packet of sugar.
“A prison warder on duty searched the basket as per requirements and discovered the hidden items. The lady was then taken to Zomba Police Station for questioning and she has been charged with introducing prohibited items into the prison,” explained Sipiliyano.
Hamisi is expected to appear in court soon to answer the charges against her.
