A 22-year-old student from DMI University Mangochi Campus has died after being hit by a speeding minibus along the Arthur Peter Mutharika Highway.

Mangochi Police spokesperson, Amina Tepani Daudi, said the deceased, identified as Samuel Josephy, a second-year Education student, hailed from Chimbiya Village, Traditional Authority Tambala in Dedza District.

Daudi added that the accident involved a Toyota Hiace minibus, registration number PE 10498, driven by Mike Justine, 40, and was driving from Liwonde going towards Mangochi.

She further stated that upon arrival at the DMI University Trading Centre, the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit the student who was crossing the road.

As a result, Josephy sustained severe head injuries and fractured ribs.

He was rushed to Mangochi District Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Meanwhile, the driver abandoned the vehicle at the scene and fled but later surrendered himself to Mangochi Police Station around midnight.

He is currently in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon.
