President of the Poetry Association of Malawi, Robert Chiwamba, says the country has made positive strides in embracing poetry.
Chiwamba, who is also one of the country’s renowned poets, made the statement on Friday as Malawi joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Poetry Day on 21st March.
Speaking in an interview with Chanco Community Radio, Chiwamba said even though there are some areas that need improvement, many sectors have involved poets in various activities as a form of relaying messages and entertainment.
“It is pleasing to note that corporate events, award galas, political rallies and many other gatherings involve poets to light up events, which is a step in the right direction,” Chiwamba said.
He added that Malawian poets stand a chance of competing on the international scene as many are now venturing into using social media platforms which allows them to showcase their talents to the whole world and attain a good following.
The theme for this year’s commemoration is “Poetry as a bridge for peace and inclusion”.
