The Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services says the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS) will help advance service delivery in as far as border management is concerned.
Spokesperson for the department, Wellington Chiponde, said so far, MIDAS has started operations at Mchinji and Dedza border points and Kamuzu International Airport, with plans of implementing the system at 16 border points nationwide.
According to Chiponde, MIDAS is cost-effective and it is also aligning with the department’s aspirations of digitalising border management services and strengthening security in the country.
“This system is intending to reduce trade costs. We are intending to assist cross-border traders so that they should not spend a lot of time accessing immigration services at points of entry,” Chiponde explained.
He further added that the system will also enhance tourism activities because visitors to Malawi will have an indelible experience that whenever they visit the country they will be accorded seamless service at points of entry.
In terms of security, Chiponde said the department is working with various partners and has put in place stringent measures to ensure that the system is protected and that people are served accordingly.
